What You Need to Know About Waterproof Core Flooring

The flooring industry is always evolving with new types of flooring and trends changing rapidly. Waterproof Core flooring has been around for some time but consumers and retailers are starting to take notice.

What is Waterproof Core Flooring?

Waterproof Core Flooring, often referred to as Wood Plastic/Polymer Composite is rigid, stable and stylish. The material is manufactured from a composite of thermoplastics calcium carbonate and wood flour. Waterproof Core Flooring is similar to Stone Plastic Composites and Rigid Core products.

Waterproof Core flooring is more suitable for environments where laminate floors are not traditionally used, including bathrooms, basements or areas exposed to moisture. WPC flooring is also ideal for large open areas, especially high-traffic commercial spaces.

Waterproof Core Flooring vs. Laminate Flooring

The biggest benefit of WPC is that it’s waterproof, while some laminates are engineered to be water “resistant”. Waterproof Core floors were the first waterproof flooring products and are similar to laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is not ideal for spaces with high moisture and humidity and areas that are prone to spills and exposure to water.

Pergo, the leading manufacturer of laminate flooring was the first to come to the U.S and is now making a rigid core product. Laminate flooring is still around, it’s just fading away.

When it comes to installation, both laminate and WPC can be easily installed over most subfloors without much preparation. However, WPC does offer a quieter and more comfortable experience due to the vinyl layer that coats the surface.

WPC flooring is slightly more expensive than laminate. However, it’s still a budget-friendly solution, especially if you want the look of wood but require a waterproof floor. Depending on the brand and features, you can usually find Waterproof Core Flooring in a reasonable price range.

Waterproof Core Flooring vs. Luxury Vinyl Planks/Tile

Luxury Vinyl Tile or Plank flooring was the first click together floating floors, they were popular a few years ago, but now they’re rarely made. Retailers only sell the glue down or loose lay LVT/LVP now.
